How to Write a Campaign Brief That Creators Actually Want to Work With

A bad brief creates bad content. A good brief unlocks a creator's best work. The difference is mostly about what you leave in and what you leave out.

Most campaign post-mortems focus on the content that was produced: the video that underperformed, the post that drove no clicks, the creator who didn't quite fit. The root cause is almost always earlier: in the brief that started the collaboration, or the absence of one. A brief that gives a creator everything they need costs a brand an hour of thoughtful preparation. The return on that investment, in content quality and conversion performance, is disproportionately large.

The brief is where campaigns are won or lost

Most campaign post-mortems focus on the content that was produced: the video that underperformed, the post that drove no clicks, the creator who didn't quite fit. The root cause is almost always earlier: in the brief that started the collaboration, or the absence of one.

A brief that gives a creator everything they need to produce excellent work costs a brand an hour of thoughtful preparation. The return on that hour, in terms of content quality and conversion performance, is disproportionately large.

What every brief must include

A functional campaign brief covers six things. First, the product or service: not a marketing pitch, but an honest description of what it does, who it's for, and what makes it different. Second, the specific campaign objective: "drive signups to our free trial" is useful; "increase awareness" is not. Third, the target audience: described specifically enough that a creator can picture them. Fourth, the mandatory messages: the two or three things that must appear, in some form, in the content. Fifth, creative guidance: not a script, but signals about tone, format preferences, and any hard restrictions. Sixth, the deliverables and timeline: what, when, how many, and in what format.

The best briefs give creators enough structure to deliver what the brand needs, and enough freedom to deliver it in a way that will actually resonate with their audience. That balance is the only thing that produces content that converts.

What to leave out

Scripting every word. Dictating exact camera angles, lighting setups, or graphic overlays. Requiring content that the creator's audience would immediately recognise as inauthentic. Specifying what music to use on a platform that might copyright-strike the audio before the brand even sees the post. These elements of over-control don't produce better content: they produce more compliant content that performs worse.

The brands with the highest creator content quality consistently report that they give creators significant creative latitude within clear strategic parameters. The output is better, the creators are more engaged, and the conversion data bears both assertions out.

The success definition that changes everything

The single addition that most improves campaign outcomes is a clear, specific success definition. Not "we want good engagement": but "we're targeting 400 trial signups at a cost per acquisition under ₦1,200." When a creator knows what the brand is actually trying to achieve, and at what scale, they make fundamentally different creative decisions. The content is sharper, the calls to action are clearer, and the conversion data at the end of the campaign reflects it.

Writing a strong brief is the single highest-leverage investment in a campaign's outcome.
