The default assumption in creator marketing is that more reach produces more results. It's intuitive, easy to defend in a budget meeting, and consistently wrong. The data from attribution-tracked campaigns tells a different story: one where the size of the audience matters far less than the specificity of the relationship between that audience and the creator's subject matter.
The size trap
Reach and conversion are not correlated in the way most campaign briefs assume. They are sometimes inversely related.
A creator with 15,000 deeply engaged followers in a specific niche talking directly to your target audience will almost always outperform a creator with 500,000 general followers on the metrics that actually matter: click-through rate, cost per signup, and purchase conversion.
Why niche audiences convert differently
A creator who has built an audience around a specific subject: personal finance, home cooking, software engineering, Nigerian fashion: has self-selected an audience with shared interests and a demonstrated trust in the creator's recommendations within that domain. When that creator recommends a product that fits the domain, the endorsement carries the full weight of that trust.
A general creator recommending the same product is offering a weaker signal to a more diverse audience. Some percentage of their followers will be interested. The rest will scroll past. The conversion gap between these two scenarios is not a rounding error: it's often the difference between a campaign that justifies its cost and one that doesn't.
Niche creators don't convert better because they have smaller audiences. They convert better because their audiences are self-selected for exactly the interest level and trust that makes a recommendation land.
How to identify niche fit before committing
Audience alignment is the first filter. Look at the creator's content categories, the vocabulary their audience uses in comments, the brands that have already worked with them and why. Past campaign performance by category is the strongest signal: a creator who has driven signups for financial products before is a quantifiably better bet for your fintech campaign than one who hasn't.
Discovery tools that filter by niche, past campaign performance, and audience demographics compress what used to be a week-long research process into minutes. For more on how to run that process rigorously, see creator discovery: matching by results, not reach.
