The assumption that paid social is the "performance" channel and creator campaigns are the "awareness" complement is being challenged by attribution data from brands that have tracked both. When creator campaign conversions are measured with the same rigour as a Facebook Ads account: click-level attribution, conversion tracking, cost-per-acquisition comparison: the results frequently tell a different story than the conventional wisdom expects.
The comparison that changed the conversation
For years, the implicit assumption in digital marketing was that paid social: Meta, Google, TikTok Ads: was the measurable channel, and creator campaigns were the brand-building complement. The data from attribution-tracked creator campaigns tells a different story.
When creator campaign conversions are tracked with the same rigour as paid social: click-level attribution, conversion tracking, cost-per-acquisition measurement: creator campaigns routinely produce CPAs that match or beat equivalent paid social placements, at higher conversion rates and with significantly better downstream retention.
Why the conversion rates are higher
Paid social reaches people who opted in to being advertised to in exchange for free content. Creator content reaches people who opted in to following a specific person they trust. The trust differential is the mechanism. When someone whose judgment you follow recommends a product, your prior probability of that product being worth trying is significantly higher than when a brand you've never heard of serves you an ad in your feed.
This doesn't mean creator campaigns always outperform paid social. Scale, category, and creator fit all matter. But it does mean that the assumption that paid social is the "performance" channel and creator campaigns are the "awareness" channel is empirically wrong when attribution is tracked properly.
Creator campaigns don't convert because the content is better than display ads. They convert because the distribution channel: a trusted relationship: is more persuasive than an ad slot. That's a structural advantage that doesn't go away.
What the highest-performing campaigns have in common
Across attribution-tracked campaigns, the variables most strongly associated with high signup conversion rates are: strong niche alignment between creator audience and product (the single strongest predictor); a specific, single call to action with a unique tracking link; content that explains why the creator uses or recommends the product rather than scripting a generic endorsement; and a landing page that delivers on the specific promise the creator made. None of these are difficult. All of them are frequently missing from underperforming campaigns.
The full framework for building campaigns with these characteristics is covered in our guide on how to structure creator campaigns from DM to deal. The data is consistent: the brands that track attribution properly and build campaigns around these variables are the ones changing their minds about whether creator marketing is a performance channel: because for them, it already is.
