What Campaign Measurement Actually Looks Like in Practice

The gap between "we track ROI" and actually having a measurement system worth using is larger than most brands realise. Here's what rigorous creator campaign measurement looks like end-to-end.

Most brands believe they measure creator campaign ROI. Few of them have a measurement system worth acting on. There's a meaningful difference between a post-campaign spreadsheet that aggregates reported impressions and engagement rates, and a real-time attribution dashboard that tracks verified conversions per creator and per content format. The second is what actually informs better decisions. Here's what it looks like to build one.

Before the campaign: the measurement setup

Measurement begins before a piece of content goes live. Every creator on the campaign receives a unique tracking link: different from every other creator's link, and from any existing links the brand uses elsewhere. The link points to the specific landing page intended for that campaign. The landing page is tested: the link resolves correctly, the conversion event fires correctly when the target action is completed, and the confirmation page that follows the conversion is confirmed as functional.

If there's a discount code in addition to the link, the code is also unique per creator. This creates two measurement vectors: attributed clicks from the link and attributed conversions from the code: which can be cross-referenced to identify discrepancies that might signal attribution issues.

During the campaign: real-time attribution

Once content goes live, the attribution dashboard shows, in real time: total clicks per creator, click-to-conversion rate per creator, total conversions per creator, CPA per creator versus the campaign's target CPA, and conversion by day (to identify content that drove a spike versus content that produced a steady trickle). This data is available immediately: not in a post-mortem two weeks after the campaign ends.

Real-time data enables real-time decisions. A creator whose content has been live for 72 hours with 800 clicks and a 6% conversion rate is significantly outperforming a creator with 600 clicks and a 1% conversion rate. The right response to that information, mid-campaign, might be to extend the first creator's deliverables, adjust or rebrief the second, or reallocate budget toward the top performer. These decisions are only available when measurement is real-time, not retrospective.

The brands getting the most from creator marketing aren't just measuring more carefully. They're measuring in real time: and using that information to make decisions during campaigns, not after them.

After the campaign: the report that drives the next decision

A post-campaign report worth acting on answers five questions. What was the total spend? How many verified conversions were produced? What was the blended CPA, and how does it compare to the target and to other acquisition channels? Which creator produced the best CPA and why? And what does the next campaign look like if we optimise for what we learned? A report that answers all five is a document that produces a better next campaign. A report that lists impressions, reach, and engagement rates with no conversion data is a report that produces the same campaign over and over.

Building the system from scratch

If you don't currently have attribution infrastructure, the minimum viable version is: unique UTM-tagged links per creator, connected to a conversion tracking setup in Google Analytics 4 or an equivalent platform, with a simple spreadsheet summarising results per creator at campaign end. It's not perfect: it misses some conversions and lacks real-time visibility: but it produces actionable data that a reach-and-impressions report doesn't. The next step up is a dedicated creator attribution platform that automates the tracking, the real-time reporting, and the post-campaign analysis.
