How to Price Your Creator Services Without Underselling Yourself

Most creators price by feel. The ones who consistently earn more price by value: and they use a framework, not a hunch. Here's how to build one.

The pricing conversation is the one most creators dread most: and handle worst. The typical approach is to think of a number, worry it's too high, revise it down by 20%, and send it with a qualifier like "but I'm flexible." That process produces below-market rates, signals insecurity, and makes renegotiation at renewal harder. There's a better approach, and it starts with treating pricing as a calculation, not a guess.

Start with your floor, not your ceiling

Your floor rate is the number below which it doesn't make financial sense to take the deal. Calculate it by estimating the time required (content creation, brief review, revision rounds, approval communication), your effective hourly rate for that time, any production costs (equipment, editing, props), and a minimum margin that makes the business risk of a one-off client worthwhile. That number: which should cover your costs and compensate your time at a rate you'd consider fair: is your floor. You don't negotiate below it. Ever.

The reason creators consistently price below market is that they anchor their rate to what they think a brand will accept, rather than to what the work requires. Setting a floor first removes that anchor and replaces it with one you own.

Layer in value premiums

Above your floor, add premiums for the variables that increase the commercial value of what you're delivering. Usage rights are the most significant: organic social posting, paid amplification, whitelisting, and long-term licensing are four qualitatively different commercial arrangements. Each should be priced separately. A brand asking for whitelisting rights is asking to run your face and credibility as their advertising asset: that's worth 30–50% on top of the base creation fee, at minimum.

Past campaign performance is the other major value premium. A creator who can show a 4% click-to-signup rate from their last three campaigns has quantified the commercial value of their audience in a way that most creators cannot. That data justifies a higher rate: and the justification doesn't require a negotiation, just a reference to the numbers. Building that data record is the highest-leverage investment in your long-term pricing power. See the analytics every creator should track to start.

Pricing is a negotiation with one party on each side. But most creators negotiate against themselves before the brand has said a word: revising their rate down based on imagined objections. Set the number the work is worth and let the brand respond.

Research the market, then price above it if your data supports it

Market rate benchmarks: the Influencer Marketing Hub benchmark report publishes annual ranges by platform and follower tier: are useful as reference points, not ceilings. They reflect average rates, not rates for creators who can demonstrate past campaign performance. If your conversion data shows you outperform average creators in your tier, your rates should reflect that premium. Market benchmarks tell you where the floor is for a creator like you. Your data tells you how far above that floor you can justify.

When to negotiate and when to hold

Not every negotiation is worth having. A brand that opens with a budget significantly below your floor is telling you something about how they value the partnership. A brand that asks for a small reduction from your stated rate because it fits their budget cycle is a reasonable conversation. The distinction matters: negotiate on the second type, walk away from the first. Holding your floor once sets the standard for how future conversations with that brand will go.
