The Case Against Spray-and-Pray Creator Selection

Reaching out to 100 creators and hoping five respond isn't a strategy. It's noise. Here's why selective, research-led creator outreach consistently outperforms volume.

The logic of spray-and-pray creator outreach is intuitive: contact enough people and some percentage will say yes. It works in the same way that cold email spam technically "works": if you measure it solely by whether any replies come back. Measured by campaign quality, creator relationship value, and brand reputation in the creator community, it's one of the most expensive approaches available. The brands getting the best creator campaign results are doing the opposite.

Why volume outreach produces the wrong outcomes

When a brand sends the same templated brief to a hundred creators, three things happen reliably. First, the brief is necessarily generic: written to apply to a broad range of creators rather than to speak specifically to anyone. Generic briefs produce generic content. Second, the creators who respond are disproportionately likely to be those who take any inbound deal rather than those with strong, engaged audiences who are selective about partnerships. Third, the creators who didn't respond notice the template: and form an opinion about the brand's approach to creator relationships that will affect future interactions.

The response rate improvement from a personalised, research-led outreach to five well-matched creators consistently outperforms the raw response volume from a spray approach: and the content quality differential is significant.

What the research-led alternative actually requires

Selective creator outreach has three stages. The first is filtering: using available data (niche, audience demographics, engagement rate, past campaign performance where accessible) to identify creators who are genuinely well-matched to the campaign goal. The second is review: spending five to ten minutes per shortlisted creator looking at their recent content, their brand collaboration history, and how their audience engages with sponsored posts specifically: not just organic content. The third is personalisation: writing an outreach message that references something specific about the creator's work and explains why this particular campaign is a fit for this particular audience.

A creator who receives a brief that demonstrates the brand has actually looked at their content will produce better work than one who receives a template. That's not sentiment: it's a function of how collaboration quality correlates with relationship investment.

The shortlist number that works

For most campaigns, five to eight well-researched creator shortlist candidates is the right number. Enough to manage the risk of some declining, not so many that the research is shallow. Of those five to eight, typically three to five will be interested in having a conversation, and two to four will progress to a deal. That's a campaign roster built on fit, not volume: and fit is what predicts conversion performance. For the full discovery process, see creator discovery: matching by results, not reach.

The brand reputation component

Creators talk to each other. A brand known for sending templated mass outreach, offering below-market rates, or providing vague briefs gets a reputation in creator communities that directly affects its ability to attract strong talent. Brands known for doing their research, writing good briefs, paying fairly, and treating creators as strategic partners attract better creators: often inbound: and retain them across multiple campaigns. That reputation is built one outreach message at a time.
