Why Video Is Now a Non-Negotiable Part of Every Creator's Output

Every major platform has restructured its algorithm to reward video. Creators who are still avoiding it are not opting out: they are being penalised.

The algorithmic shift toward video has been underway for several years, but the degree to which it has reshaped organic reach is still underestimated by creators who built their audiences on static content. Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and Pinterest have all restructured their distribution systems to favour video. A creator who produces no video is operating at a structural disadvantage in every feed that matters.

This does not mean every creator needs a production studio. The evidence from every major platform points in the opposite direction: video that feels native and personal consistently outperforms video that looks produced. The phone-to-camera format, the talking head with no graphics, the screen recording with voiceover: these formats convert because they communicate proximity. The audience feels addressed, not broadcast to.

The more specific question is format. Short-form video (Reels, Shorts, TikTok) is optimised for discovery: reaching people who do not already follow the creator. Long-form video (YouTube, LinkedIn articles with video embeds) is optimised for trust-building and deeper engagement with an existing audience. Creators who use both strategically are running two different but complementary machines simultaneously.

The barrier to starting is almost always psychological rather than technical. The first few videos are awkward. That is a universal experience, not a sign that video is wrong for a particular creator. The awkwardness dissipates with repetition, and the reach benefits begin to compound from the first week of consistent output.
