Performance-Based Creator Deals: How They Work and Why They're Growing

Pay-per-click, pay-per-signup, revenue share: performance deal structures are now accessible to brands of any size. Here's how they're structured and why both sides benefit.

The flat-fee model served creator marketing well when conversion was unmeasurable. That condition no longer exists. Attribution infrastructure has made it possible to track every click, every signup, and every purchase back to the specific creator and specific piece of content that drove it: which means performance-based pricing is now not only possible but increasingly expected by the brands that run the most rigorous campaigns.

What changed

For most of the history of influencer marketing, deals were structured around flat fees. The creator gets paid X for the post. The brand gets the content. What happens next: whether anyone clicked, signed up, or bought: was largely unknowable, and therefore impossible to price for.

Attribution infrastructure changed that. When every click and conversion is trackable in real time, performance-based pricing becomes possible. And when it's possible, the incentives on both sides change in ways that make the whole market work better.

Performance deals don't require more trust between brands and creators: they require less. The data handles the accountability. Both sides know exactly what was delivered and what it's worth.

The four deal structures

Pay per click is the entry-level performance deal. Simple, trackable, minimal brand risk. You pay for verified traffic. The creator earns based on how many of their followers take action. For awareness campaigns with a clear landing page destination, this structure is often the lowest-friction starting point.

Pay per signup filters harder. You only pay when a click converts to a registered user. This structure selects for creators whose audiences not only click: but are engaged enough to complete an onboarding flow. The CPA is higher per event but the events are significantly more valuable.

Revenue share is the deepest alignment. The creator earns a percentage of revenue from customers they refer over a set period. It aligns their incentives with the brand's long-term success: and produces the kind of ongoing advocacy that flat-fee deals almost never generate.

Milestone-based blends upfront payment with performance gates. The creator receives an initial fee, then additional payments unlock when defined conversion targets are hit. It balances creator security with brand performance accountability.

What creators gain

Performance deals feel riskier to creators unfamiliar with them: but for creators with genuine audiences who drive real action, they're the most financially rewarding deal structure available. A creator who drives 1,000 signups in a pay-per-signup deal at ₦500 per signup earns ₦500,000. The same campaign, priced as a flat fee, might have paid them ₦150,000. The difference is not marginal.

The risk: that the campaign underperforms: is real. But that risk is the same one the creator was implicitly bearing in a flat-fee deal, without any of the upside. For creators who want to negotiate these deals from a position of strength, building a track record of past campaign data: as covered in the analytics every creator should track: is the most direct route to better terms.

For creators whose audiences convert, performance deals are the single most financially efficient deal structure available. The risk is real: but so is the ceiling.

Structure deals that reward results.
