Paid advertising has historically been positioned as a brand tool: the infrastructure that companies use to buy distribution for their message. The assumption was that creators do not need to buy distribution because they already have an organic audience. That assumption is increasingly outdated.
The creators who have discovered the value of running their own ads are using them for specific, high-return use cases: promoting a course or product launch to a lookalike audience built from their existing followers, retargeting people who have visited their booking page or website without converting, and growing their email list at a controlled cost that makes the economics of list building predictable.
The mechanics are accessible. A creator with a Meta ad account, a piece of content that has already performed organically, and a specific goal: email sign-ups, course sales, booking page visits: can run a meaningful campaign within an afternoon. The existing audience provides a seed for lookalike targeting that no new advertiser can replicate, because it is built from real people who have already demonstrated they connect with the creator's content.
The data generated by running paid ads also changes the creator's brand deal negotiating position. A creator who can say "I ran ads to my own audience and the click-through to purchase was X%" has made an argument for their commercial value that impressions and follower count cannot make. Performance data from your own campaigns is the most credible signal of your audience's buying intent.
The investment does not need to be large to be valuable. Consistent small-budget campaigns that feed a specific funnel produce compounding results over time.
