Creator Discovery: Why Matching by Results Beats Matching by Reach

The way most brands find creators is optimised for the wrong thing. Follower count is visible and easy to compare. Conversion history is better: and it's now accessible.

The discovery process used by most brands: search a hashtag, sort by follower count, check the aesthetic, reach out: optimises entirely for what's visible and almost entirely ignores what predicts results. It produces campaigns that look right on paper and underperform in data, and brands that conclude creator marketing is unreliable. The problem isn't creator marketing. It's the filter.

The discovery problem

Most brands find creators the same way: they search a relevant hashtag or category, sort by follower count, look at the top accounts, and reach out to the ones whose aesthetic seems right. This process optimises heavily for what's visible (follower count, post frequency, aesthetic quality) and almost entirely ignores what matters most (whether the creator's audience converts).

The result is a predictable pattern: campaigns launched with creators who look right on paper and underperform in data. Brands conclude that creator marketing is expensive and unreliable. The cycle repeats.

Follower count is visible and easy to compare. Conversion history is better. The creator with 18,000 followers and a 4.8% click-to-signup rate from their last three campaigns is a more valuable partner than the creator with 200,000 followers and no attribution data: for almost any performance campaign goal.

What good creator discovery actually filters for

The filters that predict campaign performance are: audience niche alignment with your product category; past conversion performance (click-through rate and signup conversion) on comparable campaigns; audience demographic match (age, location, income bracket); engagement rate (not as a vanity metric, but as a proxy for relationship quality); and the creator's collaboration history (brands they've worked with and at what tier).

Of these, past conversion performance is by far the most predictive: and the hardest to access without a platform that aggregates it. When it is accessible, it compresses the guesswork out of creator selection significantly.

The shortlisting process that reduces wasted spend

Effective creator shortlisting has three stages. First filter: niche and platform match. Second filter: audience demographics and engagement rate. Third filter: and the most important: past performance data. Shortlisting five creators who pass all three filters consistently outperforms shortlisting fifty who pass only the first.

The reason brands skip the third filter is usually that the data isn't available. On platforms without attribution infrastructure, you can see follower count and engagement rate. You can't see what the creator's audience did when they clicked a link in last quarter's campaign. That data, when accessible, changes the shortlisting decision significantly: and it's the difference between a discovery process that's genuinely predictive and one that's dressed-up guesswork.

The best creator for your campaign isn't the one with the most followers. It's the one whose audience has the highest prior probability of doing what you need them to do: and that probability is derivable from data, not guesswork.

The compounding advantage of data-driven discovery

Every campaign run with proper attribution adds to the dataset that makes the next discovery decision better. After ten campaigns, a brand knows which creator niches convert for their product category, which content formats drive the best CPAs, and which creators are worth re-engaging. That knowledge compounds into an acquisition advantage that brands without attribution infrastructure cannot replicate. The brands building that advantage now: as covered in our post on measuring creator ROI beyond impressions: are the ones who will find creator marketing increasingly efficient as every campaign cycle passes.

Find creators by what they've proven, not just what they post.
